Hospice Care Week takes place between 7th - 13th October 2024 and the theme for this year is hospice retail and fundraising.
Hospices nationally are facing huge financial pressure. The modest amounts of funding they receive from the Government are forcing some to cut their vital services.
Whilst it is brilliant that hospice shops provide affordable everyday items for our communities and collectively raise millions each year, we don’t think it’s right that government funding is coming up short.
This #HospiceCareWeek, new research from Hospice UK reveals that for the first time, more money was spent in hospice charity shops than hospices received from government, as the sector struggles with the mounting financial pressures of providing vital end-of-life care. Read more here.
Here we shine a spotlight on some of our wonderful retail volunteers:
David says
”I started volunteering at the donation centre after the AMAZING Hospice at Home team supported my wife and made her comfortable in her final days.
I wanted to give something back and being a retired electronics engineer made doing the PAT testing an obvious choice. I love volunteering at the donation centre and at busy times also serve customers, it’s a great way to meet some lovely people who give all sorts of donations. Without them, I’m sure Beaumond House couldn’t help as many people as it does!”
David, shown above with a small selection of donated electrical items, volunteers every Tuesday and most Saturdays at our Beaumond House Donation Centre where he PAT tests all of our donated electrical items. As well as making sure they are safe electrically he also tests them functionally to make sure they are working properly.
Sue and Pam, pictured right are two of our Stodman Street shop volunteers receiving their long service awards.
Without our fantastic volunteers, we wouldn't be able to function. Their time and effort is invaluable.
Our fantastic team of volunteers at the Collingham shop have done an amazing job in creating a stunning Halloween display—just one of the many ways they contribute to our shops.
