In November 2021, Michael was supported by Beaumond House. This was the time that Covid-19 was at its height; Michael was concerned about the country going back into lockdown and didn’t want to go into the Hospice in case his family were unable to visit, so he chose to receive end-of-life care at home in Balderton.
With support from the Hospice at Home team, Michael spent his last days at home surrounded by his family. Just 3 weeks later, Michael’s wife died.
Maisie, Michael's Granddaughter, now 9 years old, decided that she wanted to do something to raise money for Beaumond House. Whilst on holiday in Amble, Northumberland with the family, Maisie collected sea glass that had been washed up on the beach and decided to use it to make some jewellery.
Maisie and mum Lynsey, have enjoyed spending time together making the jewellery and taking it to craft fairs and Christmas events where they have shared the family’s story with lots of customers. Maisie has sold pieces locally and has also taken orders that have been shipped not only across the UK but internationally too.
Maisie donated £210 to Beaumond House this week and aims to continue making the jewellery and raise even more. When asked why she wanted to do this, Maisie said, ‘I want to help other children’s Grandads, or Grandparents get the help they need’.
Maisie’s mum and family are extremely proud. Maisie is pictured with family friend, Balderton Parish Councillor, Joy Sellars who said ‘ Maisie is an inspiration who has chosen to give something back to her local community, in hope that this makes a difference to another person facing the end-of-life.
Well done, Maisie.’
