Volunteer Spotlight... Yvonne

"Coming here has been wonderful," ventures one of our Volunteer Drivers, Yvonne. "My original perception of Beaumond House was very much like a lot of people’s - they think it’s a sad place, but far from it!  It’s a friendly, welcoming, and supportive place."

Yvonne’s association with Beaumond House began when the Hospice gave her advice and help when her husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and she began volunteering two years ago.

"Becoming a driver seemed the easiest option as I enjoy driving. The role is more than I thought it would be. The patients I fetch are genuinely appreciative, and we have some really interesting conversations when people tell you about their lives or where they’ve travelled. The service that we offer represents enjoyment for the patients and respite for the relatives. It’s very humbling, especially knowing that for some of the people I pick up, it may be the only time that they can get out of the house.

There can be times when it’s hard – especially when people you have got to know are no longer with you and you’ve been used to picking them up for quite a while. But you’ve helped to give that person something lovely and lasting, and that’s a privilege."

When asked about what advice she would give to anyone considering volunteering, Yvonne said

"I would definitely say give it a go. It’s quite a decision to make, but once you’ve made it, it’s such a rewarding experience.  You can do as much or as little as you want, and it’s like being part of an extended family.  I’ve always believed it’s important to give something to the community."
